Capturing Each Stage of Your Baby’s First Year

snoqualmie Studio photographer for Your baby's photos

Your baby changes so much in that first year. One moment they’re giving those first sleepy smiles, and before you know it they’re sitting up, crawling across the floor, pulling up on everything they can reach, and celebrating their very first birthday.

Baby milestone photography is a beautiful way to capture those fleeting stages so you can remember not just what your baby looked like, but the personality that was beginning to shine through.

In my Snoqualmie portrait photography studio, baby milestone sessions are designed to be simple, safe, and focused entirely on your little one. With clean backdrops, soft lighting, and minimal props, the focus stays right where it should be—on your baby’s expressions, curiosity, and growing personality.

Many families choose to document a few special stages throughout their baby’s first year. Some favorites include the smiling stage around 3–4 months, the sitter milestone around 6–8 months, and of course, the first birthday celebration.

For first birthday portraits, some families love classic portraits, while others choose to celebrate with a simple cake smash to mark the occasion. Whether you prefer a clean and timeless look or something a little more playful, the studio allows us to create portraits that highlight your baby while keeping the experience relaxed and fun.

If you’re currently expecting, you may also want to explore my in-home newborn photography sessions, which capture those very first days at home before your baby begins this incredible first year of growth.

Keepsake

Most families book milestone sessions a few weeks to a few months in advance, especially if they are planning baby portraits around a specific age or birthday.

Should you book a sitter session in advance, and your baby isn't yet sitting independently when your session time comes, we can always adjust. Booking in advance saves your spot on my calendar.

Because babies develop at their own pace, it’s often best to reach out once you start noticing your baby entering a new stage—like sitting up independently or pulling up to stand.

01. When should I book a milestone session for my baby?

Simple outfits tend to photograph best in the studio. Soft textures, neutral colors, or classic baby outfits help keep the focus on your baby’s expressions. Avoiding words and large logos is key.

The most important tip when dressing your baby for photos is that their outfit is well-fitting. While I can appreciate having room to grow, in photos, that extra room can look sloppy.

Many families choose one or two outfits for their session, depending on the backdrop selections.

Even more, I'm here to help. Once your session is booked, I will guide you every step of the way to ensure you love your baby's photos!

02. What should my baby wear for their milestone session?

Yes! Cake smash portraits are a fun option for celebrating your baby’s first birthday milestone.

Some families choose a classic portrait session followed by a cake smash, while others prefer a simple birthday portrait without cake. We can plan the session based on the style you love most.

03. Do you offer cake smash sessions?

Simple outfits tend to photograph best in the studio. Clothing with minimal/subtle patterns or logos helps keep the focus on your child’s face and personality.

Solid colors, soft textures, and outfits that your child feels comfortable in all work beautifully with the studio backdrops. Once you book your session, I’ll also provide guidance to help you choose something that photographs well.

04. What should my child wear?

That’s completely okay—and very normal.

As a mom of six, I know that every child has their own personality and comfort level. Some kids jump right in with big smiles, while others need a few minutes to warm up.

In your pre-session questionnaire you'll be able to share if your child tends to be shy at first or if they have lots of energy to help me know what to expect and best prepare. Even more, you'll be able to share a few favorite topics that I can use as icebreakers.

Of course, bringing a favorite comfort item can help too. Plus, you'll love having a few photos with that thing that they carried around everywhere (trust me, the phase ends and you'll love the ability to look back on that time.)

05. What if my child is shy or doesn’t want to sit still?

Most families book their children’s portrait photography session anywhere from a few weeks to a few months in advance, especially if they’re planning around something specific like a birthday milestone or yearly portraits.

If you’re hoping to capture a moment that doesn’t last long—like a freshly lost tooth or a special accomplishment—it’s best to reach out as soon as possible so we can capture that stage while it’s still new.

The best time to book is simply when you’re thinking about it.
